AutoCAD, originally AutoDraft, was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers, and later on IBM-compatible mainframes. It was developed by the Corel company and released in a beta stage of development in March 1981. From a technical standpoint, the first release of AutoCAD was based on CorelDraw, a 1982 Corel-developed object-oriented CAD program based on ArcInfo GIS and Microsoft ADO, and released in January 1983, almost one year after AutoCAD. An enhanced version of the CAD program was released in 1984, and was named Autodesk Release 1.
In the mid-1980s, the company hired Scott Drapeau and hired Chris Hoffman to design the UI. The first two official releases of AutoCAD were titled Release 1 and Release 2, with a series of subsequent releases titled 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. These names were used to differentiate the releases and were assigned in a completely arbitrary order.
AutoCAD was originally released only for the MS-DOS environment, but in 1991, Autodesk released Windows-only software that had some functionality (a limited feature set) that was identical to the MS-DOS release, but which was not limited to the DOS environment. This was an attempt to capture the market of the independent computer repair business. At the time of its release, the Windows version of AutoCAD was also available on diskette.

AutoCAD’s file format is known as DWG or DXF depending on what product is being used. The file extension can be changed to any letter combination, but must not have any period, comma, space, question mark, or pound sign at the end. Examples are:
