On the evening of the 9th July 2016 the Members of C.P.S.U. voted to abolish the C.P.S.U. This was the end of over 13 years of continual service to the University and the members have left with many important unresolved issues and concerns. However, they have finally granted the University management the assurances and guarantees that they required to resolve the issues and concerns associated with the C.P.S.U.
The reasons for leaving were varied. A group of members felt that they were being pushed out of the Union. The University was seen to be developing a strong management team and councillors worried that they would become indistinguishable from non-members. Other members felt that a serious underlying financial crisis threatened to undermine the future of the Union. There were, however, strong forces within the Union that were happy to bow to Union-wide pressure to abolish the Council. As a result, the Council was abolished with immediate effect.
Following a lengthy period of post-interview, negotiation and discussions of all outstanding issues, the University has written to the members informing them of a number of guarantees to provide. Whilst these guarantees are welcome, they do not satisfy the core issues the Union had and the Council felt that they needed for them to remain within the union.
It was a difficult decision to make and the members of the C.P.S.U. have expressed a number of concerns and views. Members want to remain within the University as they are happy with the University’s financial position and feel that they can continue to provide an active and substantial role to strengthen the University. However, where the University is unwilling to address concerns raised, the Council believe it has no other option but to make a decision to withdraw. If the University can’t be trusted to ensure that the status of the C.P.S.U. remains what it was before September 2012 when the Council was first elected, then we can’t accept that level of trust and responsibility.
The University has reacted very badly to the decision to abolish the Council, claiming that the Council has been highly oppressive and intransigent and that they have been completely unreasonable in their aims to remain within the union. It is more than ironic that these
